This is a time of tender caring and thoughtfulness, a day (as are all times…) to share love, joy, and peace. Kindness, stillness, and anticipation mingle in the air. This is a season of embracing wonderment–of beholding what is dear to the heart. My mind travels to memories of past holidays and dear ones who have shared those precious times. I bless them for being, and having been, and will be, in my life.

There are opportunities for openness and appreciation as I greet others, even strangers, with a “Merry Christmas.” My prayer is for peace and goodwill for all humankind. I feel both a holy stillness and an energy of joyous anticipation. It is Christmas Eve.

Advent, Day 26, Welcoming the Light
Micah 5:4-5 – And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he shall be the one of peace.

Luke 2:6 – While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child.

Your journey with God has begun anew. God incarnate will be here soon. Be fervent in your prayers, gentle with one another and know God, your Creator, remains steadfast by your side today and always.

Prayer
Gracious, loving God, you have always been with me, but I am often blind to your presence. Guide me where you would have me go. Help me to move closer to you and your plan for me. Lord Jesus Christ, God, light of the world, we are no longer walking in darkness. The messiah is born! We are fixing our eyes to your light. We are here in your light, sweeping our hearts clean, and flinging the doors to our souls, our lives, wide open. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

The Disciples’ Grief Will Turn to Joy
16 In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.
17 Some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.”
19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’?
20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.
31 You believe at last! Jesus answered.
32 But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
33 I have told you these things, so in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. You will overcome the grief in this world and live in joy through your awareness of God.

Non-Duality is the practice of freeing ourselves from delusions caused by a belief in dependant pairs of opposites, where a need to consider the negative is required to achieve the positive.

Here are a few examples. One does not need to concern oneself with Darkness to live in the Light. One does not need to concern oneself with living with no awareness of god (Sin) to live in awareness of god. One does not need to concern oneself with unhappiness to live in Joy.

Practicing nonduality is about praying for what you want with no concern about what you do not want.

Advent, Day 25, Come Lord Jesus
Luke 1:52-53 – He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.

Luke 1:57-58 – The time came for Elizabeth to have her child, and she gave birth to her son; and when her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had lavished on her his faithful love, they shared her joy.

Elizabeth’s miracle child John, whose name means, “God is gracious,” was evidence of God’s lavish, faithful love, and the joy of his birth, at long last, touched everyone around her. But John was not just proof that God loved Elizabeth. He bears witness to God’s extraordinary love for the whole world. For you! Let us all bear witness to God!

We are approaching a season of great feasts when many good things will be on your table. Yet our feasts often fall short when it comes to the health considerations of those around the table. Will there be people around your table watching their cholesterol or their fat intake? Will you host anyone with diabetes? Be mindful of the health concerns around your Christmas table and plan today for choices all can enjoy.

Prayer
Loving God, help me create a Christmas season welcoming to, and mindful of, all who might visit. Prepare the way in our hearts for the Lord! God never gives up on us. Thank you God. We are forever grateful! Thank you for renewing our lives. Thank you for redemption, salvation, forgiveness, and completely filling our souls. Thank you for teaching unconditional Love! Lectio Divina is Latin for divine reading, spiritual reading, or “holy reading,” and represents a traditional Christian practice of prayer and scriptural reading intended to promote communion with God and to increase in the knowledge of God’s Word. It is a way of praying with Scripture calling one to study, ponder, listen and, finally, pray and even sing and rejoice from God’s Word, within the soul.

Lectio is typically practiced daily for one continuous hour. A selection from the Holy Scriptures is chosen ahead of time, often as a daily progression through a particular book of the Bible.

Time
Selecting a time for lectio divina is important. Typical methods are to pray for one hour in the morning, or to divide it into two half-hour periods, one in the morning and one in the evening. The key is to pre-select the time that will be devoted to the prayer and to keep it. Using the same time every day leads to a daily habit of prayer that becomes highly effective.

Place
The place for prayer is to be free from distractions. This means it should be isolated from other people, telephones, visual distractions, etc. Some find an icon to be helpful. The same place should be used for lectio if possible, especially as one first begins to practice it. Familiarity with a location reduces the possibility of distraction away from the prayer. Or, one may wish to pray in an unaccustomed place, for the express purpose of finding a place that will be dedicated to prayer alone and not other daily activities. Some practitioners conduct other devotions, such as praying before the Blessed Sacrament (Catholic Eucharist), as a preparation for Lectio Divina.

Preparation
Prior to reading, it is important to engage in a transitional activity that takes one from the normal state of mind to a more contemplative and prayerful state. A few moments of deep, regular breathing and a short prayer inviting the Holy Spirit to guide the prayer time helps to set the tone and improve the effectiveness of the lectio.

Once the stage is set it is time to begin the prayer. There are four phases of the prayer, which do not necessarily progress in an ordered fashion. One may move between different phases of the prayer very freely as the Holy Spirit guides.

Four phases of the prayer

Lectio Divina has been likened to “Feasting on the Word.” The four parts are first taking a bite (Lectio), then chewing on it (Meditatio). Next is the opportunity to savor the essence of it (Oratio). Finally, the Word is digested and made a part of the body (Contemplatio).

Lectio
This first moment consists in reading the scriptural passage slowly, attentively several times. Many write down words in the scripture that stick out to them or grasp their attention during this moment.

Meditatio
The Christian, gravitating around the passage or one of its words, takes it and ruminates on it, thinking in God’s presence about the text. He or she benefits from the Holy Spirit’s ministry of illumination, i.e. the work of the Holy Spirit that imparts spiritual understanding of the sacred text. It is not a special revelation from God, but the inward working of the Holy Spirit, which enables the Christian to grasp the revelation contained in the Scripture.

Oratio
This is prayer: prayer understood both as dialogue with God, that is, as loving conversation with the One who has invited us into His embrace; and as consecration, prayer as the priestly offering to God of parts of ourselves that we have not previously believed God wants. In this consecration-prayer we allow the word that we have taken in and on which we are pondering to touch and change our deepest selves. …God invites us in lectio divina to hold up our most difficult and pain-filled experiences to Him, and to gently recite over them the healing word or phrase He has given us in our lectio and meditatio. In this oratio, this consecration-prayer, we allow our real selves to be touched and changed by the word of God.

Contemplatio
This moment is characterized by a simple, loving focus on God. In other words, it is a beautiful, wordless contemplation of God, a joyful rest in His presence.

To probe deep into your roots: The ignorance and confusion are youself. The preconceptions which are yourself are envoys and agents sent by yourself. There is no heritage, blood line, or others. There is simply yourself. Youself are your own tree, your own wheel, of life.

I BELIEVE

I believe every person has within themselves inexhaustible reserves of potential they have never even come close to realizing.

I believe each person has far more intelligence than they have ever used.

I believe each person is more creative than he or she has ever imagined.

I believe the greatest achievements of your life lie ahead of you.

I believe the happiest moments of your life are yet to come.

I believe the greatest successes you will ever attain are still waiting for you on the road ahead.

And I believe, through learning and application of what you learn, you can solve any problem, overcome any obstacle and achieve any goal you can set for yourself.

Advent, Day 24, Offering Ourselves as Sacrifice
Luke 1:46b, 48-49 – “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.”

Hebrews 10:5 – Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, ‘Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.

The embodied God was a living sacrifice. What’s more, he calls us who are made in his image and likeness “to be living sacrifices, dedicated and acceptable to God. That is the kind of worship for you, as sensible people,” we are told in Romans 12:1. Let us consider the role our bodies plays in the greatest story every told. And let us try with all our might, to yield these bodies, to the will of God.

As part of your meditative time today, consider gifts you have received from God, maybe even writing them down. Throughout the day, consider this list, and thank God for all he has done for you.

Prayer
I am a temple, your tabernacle and dwelling place. I am made in your image and likeness. I will respect my body as I should, honor it as I would any church building I’d walk into. As I prepare for your coming, help me to see my body as what it is: a living sacrifice. Jesus, help me to obey your word, and not model my behavior by the world’s standards, but be transformed by the renewing of my mind, so that I can discern what your will is: what is good, acceptable, and mature. I need you, body and soul. Generous God, thank you for the many blessings you have poured out on me. May I remain forever grateful of your generosity. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

One with the Divine Order of Life

Reach High, for the stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal. Peace Man.

Guided and nourished by the Christ within, I continue to grow in understanding, always toward the light of God.

I am one with the Divine order of life, and in this divine flow, I am productive while at ease, peaceful, balanced, and aware.

Thoughts

When we take control of our mental state by deliberately choosing our thoughts and attitudes, we can alter the meaning we associate to the experiences we have and results we see in our life.

Our minds become magnetized with the dominating thoughts we hold in our minds, and these magnets attract to us the forces, the people, the circumstances of life which harmonize with the nature of our dominating thoughts.

Our destiny changes with our thoughts; we shall become what we wish to become, do what we wish to do, when our habitual thoughts correspond with our desires.

Stress Reduction

By practicing Physical, Psychological, and Spiritual Meditations, we have the ability to greatly reduce, if not completely eliminate, stress.

Ultimately, stress is reduced by being AWARE. Peace and Joy follow.

Physical stress reduction focuses on breathing and muscle relaxation. First, find a quite, comfortable, place. Lay down, close the eyes, and quietly breathe, taking a minimum of 10 long deep relaxing breathes. Quite the mind. Let go of the past and future. Be present. Start by relaxing the foot. Relax the foot muscles, completely, take 3, deep, relaxing breathes before proceeding to the next muscle group. Now, the lower leg, breathe, the upper leg, breathe, the thigh, breathe, the hand, breathe, the lower arm, breathe, the upper arm, the shoulder, breathe. Repeat for the opposite side of the body. Now, relax the lower back, breathe, the middle back, breathe, the upper back, breathe, the stomach, breathe, the chest, breathe, the neck, breathe, the top of the head, breathe, the forehead, breathe, the eyes, breathe, the lips, breathe, the chin. The whole body is now relaxed, completely. Repeat the steps above to more deeply and completely relax the physical body. Remember to breathe a minimum of 3 breathes per muscle group. Now rest, completely relaxed for a minimum of 5 minutes.

As you practice physical relaxation, you will more and more maintain this same relaxed state in the rest of your life.

Psychological stress reduction is centered on letting go of stressful attitudes, perceptions and perspectives. First, find a quite, comfortable, place. Lay down, close the eyes, and quietly breathe, taking a minimum of 10 long deep relaxing breathes. Quite the mind. Let go of the past and future. Be present.  Mindful meditation provides a time to become aware of the stressful thoughts, becoming aware of what is negative, painful, causing sorrow in your mind. Examine these thoughts until, as in a miracle,  the minds releases them. You will discover, as you become aware, the mind becomes quite.  Let each and every negative illusion go. 

Spiritual stress reduction is centered on understanding the nature of our soul. Knowing we are immortal and eternal, at one with god, with Jesus, with the universal mind, stress is reduced, and peace and joy follow.

Advent, Day 23, Prepare the Way of the Lord

Micah 5:2 – But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.

Mark 1:2-3 – Written in the prophet Isaiah, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness; ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, and make his paths straight.”

It is easy to feel insignificant in this world. We are preparing to celebrate a young girl in a small town giving birth to a little boy in whom the hope of the world will come to rest. God can do extraordinary things through unlikely people – including you.

Prayer
Almighty God, mold me and use me as an instrument of your will. Lord, I am sorry for my past sins, I desire not to sin anymore. You continue to come to me, mercifully forgiving me of my sins. I promise to work at become a sinless person and I acknowledge this is not possible with total surrender to your will. Give me to strength to be faithful to you, and avoid the many occasions for sin presented to me. I want to be pure of heart with great joy. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

Be the master of you own soul and realize no amount of darkness will extinguish your inner light. The important thing is not to spend our lives trying to master the environment around us. The task is to be the master the environment within us.

Fix our eyes on God, on Jesus, as a companion who empathizes with our suffering and a Savior who is working behind the scenes. Difficult circumstances increase our ability to experience intimacy with Christ.

When I experience joy, I fully understand my reason for being. All else falls away, all worries, all doubts. I am one with the Creator. I am fully present, fully engaged in life. I am called to find joy, to be joy, to wake up to joy in every moment. Joy is my divine birthright, my natural state. Joy is my natural state of being. When I am expressing joy, I feel intimately connected to God. At times when I fully experience a joyful manifestation of Spirit, I may feel a wellspring of emotion.

Psalm 16:11 – You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy.

Advent, Day 22, Giving, Be Aware of God, of Jesus

Luke 3:10-11 – And the crowds asked [John the Baptist], “What should we do?” In reply he said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.”

Mark 13:37 – And what I am saying to you I say to all: Stay awake!

Scriptures exhort us: stay awake!

You are approaching a season of gift giving. Consider taking this passage literally. Take a few moments to clean out your closet of unneeded clothing or your pantry of food you do not need. If you do not know a family in need, share these items with a local church, clothes closet or food pantry.

Prayer
Risen Savior, Lord, have mercy on me. Today is the day of my salvation. In this very instant, make me ready to say yes, and amen, to every way you wish to present yourself to me. Come, Lord Jesus. Merciful God, in this season of giving, help me be mindful of the needs of my brothers and sisters. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

When you have developed an awakened mind, and thus full awareness of God in your heart, all the good things in life are magnetically attracted to you, and without effort, pour down upon you like rain.

Advent, Day 21, Always On Time
Philippians 4:6-7 – Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 11:2-5 – When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them.

Advent is a short journey within the larger context of your life. But travel is almost always more fulfilling when you are joined by someone else. This passage notes that your life should be an ongoing conversation with God, that you are never alone on your journey.

Prayer
God of my past, present and future, incline my ears to you so that I might hear your still small voice guiding me. My Jesus, You are God. You create good in my life, and in the whole world. I embrace what you do in my life, and in the lives of others. I rejoice in your love. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

“It’s time to stop tiptoeing around the pool and jump into the deep end, head first. It’s time to think big, want more and achieve it all!”

As I become aware of my breathing, I am ulimately emancipated and united with with God, with Jesus.

Regulating and channeling one’s breath provides a bridge between the individual self and Jesus, God.

Advent, Jesus is Family
Philippians 4:5 – Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.

John 1:10-12 – He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God.

Is your gentleness like a light hidden under a basket? Do not hide the concern, the care, you have for others. Walk through each day as though the Lord is near and be willing to make yourself vulnerable to others.

Prayer
Brother Jesus, you’ve enlightened me. God of peace, as I walk among your children today may they see your face in mine. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

It takes regular practice to develop the ability to feel something as subtle as when the universal soul and the individual self begin to separate in the course of a breath, and recognition is what pranayama is all about. By practicing pranayama and regulating the flow of prana with measured observation and distribution of the breath, the mind becomes still. When this happens, we can allow the energy we normally use to process the world to instead bend inward.

Asana practice makes the body fit for pranayama, and pranayama practice makes the mind fit for meditation. In order for us to reach the ultimate union of our individual self with the universal soul, we need to experience meditation.

You’ve probably heard that the word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means to yoke or unite. The ultimate goal of yoga is liberation, also known as samadhi, through the union of the individual self with the universal soul. But just how do we unite what we perceive as a small individual self with something as vast, invisible, and ineffable as the universal soul?

The three stages of the breath in pranayama—inhalation (puraka), retention (antara kumbhaka), and exhalation (rechaka) connects us to the universal soul. During our inhalation, we are inviting prana to come in. The individual self must then move out of the way in order to make room for the soul. Through this process, we are able to generate energy, expansion, and awareness within.

Think of the contact of the breath against the inner lung as the connection between universal soul and individual self. When we consciously stop the flow of breath (retention), we organize the mind’s thoughts and the body’s experience. The length of the retention varies. It should last just until the content (prana) begins to move away from the container (the lung). We must keep the mind connected to the experience of the body to know when it’s time to exhale.

The Breath/Brain Bond
It is our goal to know at exactly what second the soul and the self begin to release away from each other. That is exactly when the exhalation should begin. Developing the ability to feel something as subtle as when the universal soul and the individual self begin to separate in the course of a breath takes regular practice and is what pranayama is all about.

In normal breathing, the brain initiates the action of inhalation and draws energy to itself. This keeps the brain in a state of tension. When the brain is tense, the breath is constricted. But in pranayama, the brain remains passive, and the lungs, bones, and muscles of the torso initiate the inhalation. Rather than suck in air, the lungs, diaphragm, ribs, and abdomen receive the breath. The breath must “be enticed or cajoled, like catching a horse in a field, not by chasing after it, but by standing still with an apple in one’s hand. Nothing can be forced; receptivity is everything. We are to do pranayama with our intelligence, as opposed to our brains.

By practicing pranayama and regulating the flow of prana with measured observation and distribution of the breath, the mind becomes still. When this happens, we can allow the energy we normally spend engaging with and processing the world to bend inward.

Asana practice makes the body fit for pranayama, and pranayama practice makes the mind fit for meditation. In order for us to reach the ultimate union of our individual self with the universal soul, we must first experience dhyana, or true meditation.

Meditation cannot be done if the practitioner is under stress, has a weak body, weak lungs, hard muscles, collapsed spine, fluctuating mind, mental agitation, or timidity. When performed correctly and without strain, pranayama cools and rests the brain and floods the body with vital energy. It relieves stress and, therefore, prepares us for meditation.

If at any time during the practice of pranayama you experience pain in the head or tension in your temples, it means that you are initiating the breath from your brain, not your lungs. If this happens, return to normal breathing and relax.

Supine Pranayama
Lie down in a variation of Savasana, in which the spine and chest are supported, to create enough relaxation so the breathwork can be done safely.

The drawback to lying down is that the breath is constricted because the back lungs press against the support. Longtime practitioners prefer to sit because the entire torso is free to move— in front, in back, and on the sides. In Light on Pranayama, the practitioner needs two essential things: a stable spine and a still, but alert, mind. Both of these are built up with a strong asana practice. Given the hazards of forcing a pranayama practice, it’s best to build your practice slowly and with care.

When lying down for pranayama, use blankets to support the spine and head. When the props are positioned correctly, the chest opens and relaxation results. When positioned incorrectly, the lower back and neck harden. Lie so that the buttocks rest on the floor and the blankets support the sacral and lumbar regions of the back. Your height and level of flexibility will dictate the distance between your buttocks and the end of the bottom blanket as well as between the bottom edges of the two blankets. The end of the top blanket will be between three-fourths of an inch and an inch and a half from the edge of the bottom blanket. If your head tips back when you lie down, put a block under it with a blanket on top. The skin of the forehead should flow toward the eyebrows.

Pranayama begins with observation. As you lie there, relax your entire body and begin to observe your breath. After several minutes, you will notice that your breath has become slower and slightly deeper, because you have relaxed. As you breathe normally, notice where you feel the breath in your body. Does your abdomen move with each breath? Do you feel your ribs move when you inhale and exhale? At the end of a normal exhalation, pause for a second or two before taking your next inhalation. It should be soft and smooth. If you feel tense, or are gasping for air, your pause was too long. Add a slight retention at the end of the exhalation several times. Then try taking a slightly deeper inhalation. To initiate the breath, move your ribs outward to the side. Instead of forcing the breath in, move the ribs to allow it in. When you have taken that slightly deeper breath, pause for a second before you slowly and smoothly exhale.

If you feel tension anywhere in the body, or if you find yourself gasping for air, you have done too much and have been too aggressive. If you feel relaxed and calm in your body, especially in your head, practice the complete cycle: a short pause at the end of an exhalation; then a slow, relaxed inhalation initiated by the rib cage moving outward; a slight pause at the end of the inhalation; then a slow, complete exhalation followed by a short pause. All of this should be done without any tension in the body. If you feel tense or nervous at any time, simply return to normal breathing, observe your breath, and relax. Practice this pranayama as long as you can stay focused and relaxed. Start slowly and build up your practice over time.

Seated Pranayama
Sitting properly takes a great deal of effort and strength. In order to do pranayama in a seated position without strain, the body must be quite supple and strong. A steady asana practice will build the necessary strength and flexibility to sit correctly. When you’re learning to do seated pranayama, it is essential that you feel stable in the posture before adding the breath. If you cannot take a deeper inhalation without strain while seated, just practice sitting without adding the breath. You can continue to learn the breath while lying down. When the seated posture is correct, the breath will come. Don’t force it.

Sit in a simple cross-legged position. Use enough blankets under your hips so that your knees are parallel to or below your hips, not above them. In an attempt to lift the spine, many of us harden the lumbar spine and draw it inward, which moves us to the front of our sitting bones. To sit correctly, center yourself on the points of the sitting bones and draw the front spine and side chest up without creating hardness in the low back. Release the back of the neck and move the head down.

When you practice pranayama in a seated position, you must move the head down to create Jalandhara Bandha. A lifted head brings pressure to the heart, brain, eyes, and ears.

Postpranayama Savasana, Variation
After practicing pranayama of any kind, it is important to end with Savasana in order to soothe the nerves and erase any tension that you may have inadvertently created during the practice. Also, after pranayama, you should wait at least 30 minutes before practicing asanas. It is too jarring to the nervous system to go immediately from the quiet, calming practice of pranayama to the more active, physically demanding practice of asana. Allow for a gentle transition between your pranayama and any activity you choose to engage in following the practice.

To set yourself up properly place one thin, folded blanket on the floor. Lie over it so that the blanket is perpendicular to the spine and below the base of the shoulder blades. Place another folded blanket under the head. Allow the shoulders to rest on the floor. This support creates a gentle lift for the sternum, which is soothing to the nerves.

Luke 2:29–32

Lord, now you let your servant go in peace; Your word has been fulfilled.
My eyes have seen the salvation you have prepared in the sight of every people, A light to reveal you to the nations and the glory of all people.

The Latin title, Nunc Dimittis, simply means “dismiss now.” In a sense, Simeon is saying, “May I be dismissed now? I have seen that my salvation is here!”

Simeon also includes Gentiles in his song! Later, in Jesus’ ministry, the court of the Gentiles would be the site of the moneychangers who did temple business. No doubt the reason for the Court of the Gentiles was lost on the Jewish leaders. But Simeon understood, and knew this Messiah was sent for all people, not just Israel.

Luke 1:68-79

“Praise be to the Lord, the God of all people, because he has come and has redeemed his people. He has raised up a horn of salvation for all, Salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us, to show mercy, to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; For you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

In this song, we find it is not merely John the Baptist, but we ourselves who are addressed: “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins.”

This was John’s calling, and it is our own, a truth both consoling and terrifying. We are enslaved, by selfishness and addiction and all the wreckage sin can wreak on the world, but are we willing to risk being freed? Do we dare to enter that dangerous new country, leaving sure comforts behind? Perhaps it is time to surrender, open our hearts, and accept the wonder of Christmas by saying, We have no choice. God is with us.

I love to walk on country paths, beautiful trees, wild plants and grasses on both sides, putting each foot down on the earth in mindfulness, fully aware of the wondrous earth – existence simply being a miraculous and mysterious reality.

People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don’t even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the curious eyes of a child, our own two eyes. All is a miracle.

Advent, Day 19, Let Your Light Shine

Isaiah 12:2-3 – Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid, for the LORD GOD is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

John 1:6-9 – There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe in him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

Tell what we know about Jesus, about God, let us Rejoice!

Imagine a time when you were very thirsty, maybe even dehydrated. As you begin to sip on water, you feel your body coming back into balance. As you drink water today, think of how this is a wonderful metaphor of our salvation.

Prayer
Creator God, thank you for life-giving water that quenches the thirst of my Spirit. I radiate the Light of Jesus. I tell others what I have seen, and what I know of you. You are love. This I know. So make me a lover, of you and others. I rejoice that you’ve given me your light, I am in darkness no more. Bring light to the whole world. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

As enlightenment strengthens, hate is weakened, then forever eliminated.

Not by hate is hate defeated; Hate is quenched by love. This is the eternal law.

Dread hatred from within and defend yourself against it.
In calamitous times it will cut deeper than a potter’s knife.

One act of pure love in saving life is greater than spending the whole of one’s time in religious offerings to the gods.

Advent, Going the Distance
Zephaniah 3:19 – I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth.

Isaiah 52:7 – How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, your God reigns.

Everyone comes in contact with outcasts, even if the outcast in your life is just the awkward and insecure person who makes people uncomfortable whenever he or she is around. Do you interact with such people in positive ways or do you help add to their feelings of separation?

Through Jesus, God stepped from eternity into time, an incomprehensible distance, to be with us; to save us; to bring us home. He reigns in our hearts, and rules over all the world. This is welcome news for those who have languished here, so far away from our soul’s home. Thank you Lord Jesus Christ.

Prayer
Understanding God, help me see your imprint on each person who comes before me this day.

Lord, you are in plain sight. God, I pray you always fill our souls forever. We sing in joy. Jesus, thank you for coming and saving us from our sins. I rejoice and am comforted feeling your presence. As I laid in ruins because of my own choices, you came into plain sight and saved my soul. You have brought me to salvation.

Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

We are naturally free to control our own actions, including choosing to love, to be happy, and to be aware of god. We can not control the actions, including the feelings, of others, nor can we control our station in life God has provided.

Advent, Day 17, Offering God Our Best Gifts

Zephaniah 3:16 – On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak.

Whether you are praying or helping a neighbor, your hands are an important element in your service to God and others. Make a fist as tight as you are able, then spread your hands as wide as you can. If this does not hurt, repeat it several times throughout the day.

Prayer
Gracious God, I thank you today for hands that can serve you in a variety of ways. I obey your will. You are my salvation. I love and adore you. I give you my grateful heart and rejoicing in your saving grace. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

“A star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel.” Numbers 24:17 (2).

“On entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11

The wise men followed a star. When I read this narrative I’m following the wise men, but end up finding a star. But do I see him as clearly as these learned men did? What do the gifts I offer the Lord say about my worship? Do I give him reverence and honor, rather than gold, gifts of the soul fit for a king. Do I offer him my most fervent, sincere prayers, rather than frankincense, knowing he is a priest who ever lives to intercede for me? And what about the myrrh? What a strange gift it was from the Magi. Myrrh was bitter, used for its medicinal properties. But it had another use: to embalm the dead. What can I offer Christ knowing he will die for my sins? The only thing I have that’s acceptable is my grateful heart, rejoicing in his saving grace.

I would rather fail trying than succeed at doing nothing.

Stay Clear! Be not moved by thoughts of  being equal, inferior, or superior. The one who thinks himself equal or inferior or superior to others is, by that very reason, involved in confusion.

As my mind becomes firm like a rock and no longer shakes in a world where everything is shaking, God is my greatest friend and suffering does not come my way.

My Dependance is on God alone. The sage who has freed himself from dependence on others, words, or knowledge does not risk the smothering of truth.

God is the source of all powers of life. God is the lord of all, the great seer who dwells forever in the cosmic womb. May God purify my consciousness! O Lord, in whom alone I can find peace, May I see your divine Self and be freed from all impure thoughts and all fear.

Advent, Day 16, Sing Unto the Lord
Zephaniah 3:15 – The LORD has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more.

Zephaniah 3:17-18 – The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior; He will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love, He will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals.

This is a season full of song. Before Thanksgiving day some radio stations devote all their airtime to holiday favorites until January. We read of angel choirs singing “glory to God in the highest,” and open the doors of our homes to joyful carolers warbling “o come let us adore him.” But Zephaniah presents a startling contrast: instead of us singing of Jesus’ goodness, we get a picture of him belting out a festive praise song to us. Not only do we rejoice because of his salvation, he rejoices to save us.

As you walk today, walk with an attitude of confidence even if you lack it yourself. God wants you to live with confidence in yourself and in the promises God has made for you. Pray today for God to remove unneeded anxiety from your life.

Almighty God, help me remember that you are always shouldering burdens with me, so that I am never alone. Song of my soul, I delight in you, you rejoice over me! my salvation gives you immense satisfaction, and pleasure. I imagine you smiling, rejoicing, and singing a joyous song for me ever in my heart and mind. Renew me in your love.Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. Advent Day 15, Rejoice!
Luke 3:5-6 – “’Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”

Philippians 4:4 – “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.”

Have you ever walked in mud, loose gravel or a dry, sandy beach and noticed how quickly you get tired? Compare that vision to one of walking on a gymnasium floor or a freshly paved road. Are there people in your life whose faith is like walking on loose gravel? Pray for guidance so that you might help them find a firmer footing.

Prayer
God who saves us, I welcome Jesus. Every trace of sadness is being replaced by joy and hope as my awareness of your presence fills my soul. I pray my soul increases in the awareness of the Lord each day, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. Mighty One, you have done great things for me, and holy is your name. I need your saving grace, every moment of my life. Loving God, help me be a better voice of your will, of your message, of your peace. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. Revelations 4

A perfect outcome is happening concerning your every condition and circumstance. The power of God is working wonders in your life. Do not fear. believe and live love, and you will live in joy.

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
pass into nothingness; but still will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing.

God pulls you from your tower, takes away your pain, shows you all the beauty you have always possessed – I am now aware.

Advent, Day 14, Giving It All Away
Luke 3:3-4 – [John the Baptist] went into all the regions around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’”

If time and weather permit, consider changing the location of your walk today. Walk a new path and imagine you are John the Baptist walking in the wilderness. How does your life proclaim, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord?’ Consider praying for your neighborhood as you walk today.

Prayer
You gave your all, Jesus. I want to give my whole self to you, but without your enabling grace, this level of submissiveness is impossible. Please Lord, help me to be Truthful, Loving, Compassionate. I truly am your servant and I can not save myself by my own works. Gracious God, thank you for giving strength to my voice so I might better proclaim your truth. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

Let us abandoning malicious speech, let us abstain from malicious speech. Do not speak that which divides. Let us speak that which unites. Let us be promoters of friendship, of concord.

Advent, Day 13, Coming out of the Darkness
In every nation anyone who fears God and does what is right
is acceptable to him. Acts 10

Philippians 1:9-11 – And this is my prayer. Your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you determine what is best, so in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness coming through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.

Imagine the physical labor required to harvest a field or vineyard in biblical times. With fewer opportunities for movement in today’s world, you must be intentional about incorporating exercise into your routine. Add steps to your day today. Walk to a coworker’s desk rather then sending another email, or park in a space further from the entrance.

Prayer
I’m asking for you to illuminate me. Nicodemus, in coming to you, came to the light. Help me, beloved Jesus, to come out of any form of darkness surrounding me. Make yourself available to me in the night, and in the warmth of your blazing sun. God of the harvest, allow me opportunities to sow seeds of justice, honesty, virtue and decency. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

I am a sacred and unique creation of God. As a creation of God, I am worthy of good. I know this is true, and I show this is true. I go about living my life fully each day by accepting my good with gratitude.

I am in awe of life in every varied form it is expressing in my world. With reverence for all life, I am considerate and compassionate toward others and also myself.

Each creation of God is sacred and unique, so I feel no cause to compare my skills and talents with those of others. I celebrate our uniqueness and our oneness of life.

When I think about my attributes, when I look at myself in the mirror, I do so with appreciation for the wisdom of God that guides me, the love of God that inspires me, and the life of God that enlivens me.

Advent, Day 12, Being Compassionate
Philippians 1:3-5 – I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now.

An important part of Paul’s prayer life was to offer prayers of thanksgiving for the work of other people of faith. Is there someone in your life who shares the gospel in a way helpful to you or someone close to you? Offer a prayer of thanks to God for that person.

Prayer
Loving God, for those people around me whose lives shine as a beacon directing me to your truth, I give you thanks. In this season of giving, so many are desperate for what only you can provide, Lord. Make me and those who journey with me your servants to those in need. Come into our hearts Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of our Lives. We give ourselves to you. So it is, and will always be.

Redress and reprove yourself. Examine yourself. Having complete awareness of god, the universe, you guard the self. Surrender yourself to God. My every move is made according to gods divinity and grace. Mindful, you dwell at ease. Your own self is your own mainstay. You set your own sails. God is your guide. Be aware. As a creation of god,  joy will be yours!

As redress myself, what comes to my mind are great gifts that God has blessed me with. The greatest gifts in my life are to be aware of god, to be aware of love, and to give freely my love to others. Thank you Lord Jesus Christ for teaching unconditional love, for there is pure god awareness exist.

Advent, Day 11, Hard Truths

Luke 1:78-79 – “By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Isaiah 2:4 speaks of a time when people “…shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks…” The coming of God’s kingdom promises a time when tools of war are turned into farm implements. As you walk today, consider small ways you can encourage peace.

Prayer
God of Peace, help me more clearly see your world view so I might better share it with others. Sometimes, it’s hard for me to face the facts about myself. I’m tempted to reject those who care enough to tell me when I’m wrong. Advent is a season of repentance. As I watch and wait for the arrival of Christ in fresh ways in my life, please help me recognize and receive those you send to correct me. God, help me to remember when you chastise me out of your great love, you’re only doing so to release me from captivity, open my eyes to my blind spots, and free me from oppression. This is all good news, and I thank you. Jesus is exactly who he said he is. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

Albert Einstein had a formula for success. This may be the most important math equation you will ever see.

“If A equals success, then the formula is: A=X+Y+Z.
X is work.
Y is play.
Z is keep your mouth shut.”

X. Work: Albert Einstein had a tremendous work ethic and because of that gave more to society and modern science than any person in recent times.

Y. Play: Einstein, however, did not work 24 hours a day and made time for fun and relaxation. His idea of fun may have been different from yours, but that doesn’t mean it still wasn’t play.

Z. Keeping your mouth shut: The person who talks the least says the most. A friend of mine complains the woman he is dating talks too much. I don’t know how to break the news to him: The problem is not she talks too much, but simply he is irritated he isn’t able to talk. Now, let me just say this is not a generic man and woman statement. I am speaking about a specific person I know. His desire is to constantly talk, and because he likes to talk so much, he will talk in circles. If you let him talk long enough he will repeat the same thing three times and then contradict himself. His desire is not to hear but to be heard.

Albert Einstein, on the other hand, had nothing to prove. He felt no need to be the “Chatty Cathy” he could have been with his knowledge. It wasn’t important to him to talk to everyone he met and talk over their heads to demonstrate his IQ. Instead, he learned the value of quietness and solitude.

Shift your mindset from being a talker to a listener. It has been said that you can make more friends in five minutes by becoming interested in others than you can make in five years of trying to get others interested in you! How do you become interested in others? You ask questions and then keep your mouth shut!

Friends are caring people who can see each other’s shortcomings and strengths and help one another work on both. They are examples of God’s love in action.

The only way to have a friend is to be one. Friendship is a sacred bond and it provides a safe haven in which to listen, share, and rest in complete trust. My friends add great meaning to everyday life and special occasions.

With friends, I can laugh, cry, be silly, get serious, and reveal whatever is on my heart. I treasure all my friends. I am grateful for the joy and stability we bring to one another as we share mutual love and respect.

Advent, Day 10, Prepare Us for Greater Works
Luke 1:76-77 – “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins.”

These words came from Zechariah in dedicating his son, John the Baptist, to the Lord. Consider today how you prepare the way for the Lord through your words and actions.

Understanding God, give me strength and wisdom to be a better herald of your coming kingdom. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

Love is my most important virtue. To love another, and to be loved is the greatest of all joys.

Human progress, lo, my progess, is based soley and completely on manifested love. Pure love is pure god awareness and god connected-ness.

One act of pure love in saving life is greater than spending the whole of one’s time in religious offerings to the gods.

Love the world, lo, the world is changed, changed forever.

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way.  It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

When you are with someone you love very much, you can talk and it is pleasant, but the reality is not in the conversation. It is in simply being together, in love.

Meditation is the highest form of prayer. In it you are so close to God that you don’t need to say a thing. It is just great to be together, together with God.

Advent, Day 9, Transform our Lives

Luke 3: 21-22 – Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus had also been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.

Malachi 3:1 – See I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come into his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight – indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.

Journeys often have a purpose, getting from point A to point B being the most obvious. As you continue Advent, the scriptures challenge you to consider another reason for making a journey, and that is to deliver a message. Consider your role as a messenger for God.

Prayer
Father of the Beloved, please give me discernment, so I may know when I should be still with you, and when I should soar with you; when you speak, and how to recognize you in all things in always. Almighty God, walk with me this week as I consider the words and actions which communicate the message I am sending about your kingdom. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. Christmas Thoughts

Christmas has always been a special time. I always have a great amount of thoughts and feelings flow through me. I feel the same from others.

Everything, everywhere, all seems to be opening, opening, opening, inviting me to be one with God.

I recommit my love of family and friends, to the world. Thank you all for your love! Thank you God!

This weekend, Max, Miri, and I will be getting the Christmas decor our -Lights for the House, a tree, buying a few gifts.

Last night, I went to Donna’s and had a super thanksgiving type feast – turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, pumpkin pie, her hom made fudge. Wow. I so thank her for being so loving. I have a great amount of gratitude and thankfulness.

I think about how joyful I feel, how so much farther I have to go in my growth. How I would feel if I would just once and for all live in god centeredness.

Advent, Day 8, Searching for Christ

Psalm 24:4 – Make me know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths.

Engage often in conversations with God to help draw you closer to God’s plan for you. Rejoice today in your progress, even if it seems insignificant.

Prayer
God of wonder, you can make the faith of a mustard seed do amazing things. Continue walking beside me as I continue in my journey toward you. Enlighten my eyes to see Christ everywhere in fresh, life changing ways. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. Amen.

Forgive

We are injured and hurt emotionally, not so much by other people, by what they say or do, but by our own attitude and our own response.

I forgive, and therefore, I am free.

When I temporarily forget the importance of living joyously in the moment, I may feel weighed down by another’s behavior or even my own. Becoming aware of the value of peace, contentment, and insight I am missing out on, I go within to the silence and receive a fresh perspective.

Centering my thoughts in prayer, I envision myself and others in the light of the truth about us. We are God’s creations, blessed with love, strength, and security. There is a wealth of good in our lives. I give thanks for us all and for the lessons we have learned through our experiences together.

In prayer, I release all people, all situations into God’s care. This is forgiveness through which I experience a lightheartedness and freedom beyond measure.

Enlightenment

Enlightenment comes to those who are willing to take action to become fully aware. Let in that which serves you, let out, let go, that which does not.

Enlightenment is beyond dualism – right and wrong, like and dislike. There is simply the glourious and magnificent now, living in the awareness of god.

We must die to each moment and allow life to express itself through us. As our ego aligns to this truth, peace and serenity arise, and all suffering comes to an end. When we surrender to the truth of what is, we will find freedom beyond measure, as surely as the river finds itself to the sea.

Why destroy your present happiness by a misery of what has been or may never come at all? For every substantial grief had many shadows and the shadows are of our own making.

The Lord of Love holds in his hand the world,
Composed of the changing and the changeless,
The manifest and the unmanifest.
The separate self, not yet aware of the Lord,
Goes after pleasure, only to become
Bound more and more. When it sees the Lord,
There comes an end to its bondage.

“That’s wonderful,” I replied. “But it’s not enough. You must not only believe that He was a great prophet, but that He is God. You must know Him as divine, as a Savior.”

This was difficult for my friend to accept. He had learned some things about Jesus but had never established communion with Him through reading His Word or through prayer. It was hard for him to believe that all men are sinners (as we studied in a perivous section), or that there is an escape from sin.

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God–children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

Prayers to God often are often open-ended requests for direction. In today’s passage, Apostle Paul is asking God to lead him to specific people. There is at least one person in your life who needs your presence. Consider that person and pray today that God will provide a way to lead you to them.

Jesus, please help me, kind Father, to know You. Merciful God, while I am trying to walk where you lead, I ask today that you lead me to this person who is weighing heavy on my heart and provide me a way to offer this person comfort. Advent: the coming, the start, the arrival, the dawn of a journey leading us to a renewed or new understanding of our relationship to God, to the world, and to one another. Advent is a journey in which the destination may not be known at the time of departure. As such, Advent is a journey of faith.

November 29, Day 1, Listening
Luke 1:26-21: In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you. But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will call him Jesus.

I accept Jesus as my Savior. Let us connect to Mary’s awe. We can take a few clues from Jesus’ first disciple. She pondered Gabriel’s strange greeting perplexed, before she sat in amazement at his message. It was only then she believed, even before she became Jesus’ mother. Without her exquisitely reverent hearing, believing, and then acting on God’s directive, Mary would have never conceived Him.

God of amazing grace, I am listening to you. I ponder deeply what you’ve said. I am reverent and devote myself to you. Your indwelling presence is a gift. I accept Christ. I submit to your will. You give me the willingness and the obedience so I may bear the Christ in me faithfully. Come into my heart, Lord Jesus Christ. November 30, Day 2, Behold his Coming
Advent is the time when Christians anticipate God dwelling among us through Jesus and a time when God incarnate will dwell among us again. It is a time of great anticipation – of birth, rebirth and renewal.

Advent is a time of movement – toward a new vision of the world, toward a renewed vision of God and toward a new vision of ourselves living in concert with God’s plan for us.

These Advent lectionary selections often focus on this idea of movement which is both physical and metaphorical in nature. As you experience this season of Advent, consider walking daily as a symbolic discipline of your Advent journey.

Almighty God, be with me today in my Advent journey. Help me move closer to you and your plan for me. God of amazing grace, I’m listening to you. I’m pondering deeply what You’ve said? Psalm 25:1 – To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul.

Close your eyes and meditate on this brief passage. Repeat this passage raising your arms over your head each time. As you raise your arms, stretch your fingers wide as though you are holding tight to God’s grace. Throughout the day, take a fifteen second prayer break by repeating the passage four times to yourself.

Advent Prayer: Transform Our Lives

“Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus had also been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” Luke 3: 21-22

Malachi 3:1 – See I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come into his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight – indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.

Journeys often have a purpose, getting from point A to point B being the most obvious. As you continue Advent, the scriptures challenge you to consider another reason for making a journey, and that is to deliver a message. Consider your role as a messenger for God.

Father of the Beloved, please give me discernment, so I may know when I should be still with you, and when I should soar with you; when you speak, and how to recognize you in all things in always. Almighty God, walk with me this week as I consider the words and actions which communicate the message I am sending about your kingdom. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. December 8, Day 10, Prepare Us for Greater Works
Luke 1:76-77 – “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins.”

These words came from Zechariah in dedicating his son, John the Baptist, to the Lord. Consider today how you prepare the way for the Lord through your words and actions.

Understanding God, give me strength and wisdom to be a better herald of your coming kingdom. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

December 9, Day 11, Hard Truths
Luke 1:78-79 – “By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Isaiah 2:4 speaks of a time when people “…shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks…” The coming of God’s kingdom promises a time when tools of war are turned into farm implements. As you walk today, consider small ways you can encourage peace.

Prayer
God of Peace, help me more clearly see your world view so that I might better share it with others. Sometimes, it’s hard for me to face the facts about myself. I’m tempted to reject those who care enough to tell me when I’m wrong. Advent is a season of repentance. As I watch and wait for the arrival of Christ in fresh ways in my life, please help me recognize and receive those you send to correct me. And more than that, good Father, help me to remember when you chastise me out of your great love, you’re only doing so to release me from captivity, open my eyes to my blind spots, and free me from oppression. This is all good news, and I thank you. Jesus is exactly who he said he is. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

December 10, Day 12, Being Compassionate
Philippians 1:3-5 – I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now.

An important part of Paul’s prayer life was to offer prayers of thanksgiving for the work of other people of faith. Is there someone in your life who shares the gospel in a way that is helpful to you or someone close to you? Offer a prayer of thanks to God for that person.

Loving God, for those people around me whose lives shine as a beacon directing me to your truth, I give you thanks. In this season of giving, so many are desperate for what only you can provide, Lord. Make me and those who journey with me your servants to those in need. Come into our hearts Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of our Lives. We give ourselves to you. So it is, and will always be.

December 11, Day 13, Coming out of the Darkness
Philippians 1:9-11 – And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.

Imagine the physical labor required to harvest a field or vineyard in biblical times. With fewer opportunities for movement in today’s world, you must be intentional about incorporating exercise into your routine. Add steps to your day today. Walk to a coworker’s desk rather then sending another email, or park in a space further from the entrance.

Prayer
I’m asking for you to illuminate me. Nicodemus, in coming to you, came to the light. Help me, beloved Jesus, to come out of any form of darkness surrounding me. Make yourself available to me in the night, and in the warmth of your blazing sun. God of the harvest, allow me opportunities to sow seeds of justice, honesty, virtue and decency. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

December 12, Day 14, Giving It All Away
Luke 3:3-4 – [John the Baptist] went into all the regions around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’”

If time and weather permit, consider changing the location of your walk today. Walk a new path and imagine you are John the Baptist walking in the wilderness. How does your life proclaim, ‘Prepare the way of the Lord?’ Consider praying for your neighborhood as you walk today.

Prayer
You gave your all, Jesus. I want to give my whole self to you, but without your enabling grace, this level of submissiveness is impossible. Please Lord, help me to be Truthful, Loving, Compassionate. I truly am your servant and I can not save myself by my own works. Gracious God, thank you for giving strength to my voice so I might better proclaim your truth. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

December 13, Day 15, Rejoice!
Luke 3:5-6 – “’Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’”

Philippians 4:4 – “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.”

Have you ever walked in mud, loose gravel or a dry, sandy beach and noticed how quickly you get tired? Compare that vision to one of walking on a gymnasium floor or a freshly paved road. Are there people in your life whose faith is like walking on loose gravel? Pray for guidance so that you might help them find a firmer footing.

Prayer
God who saves us, I welcome Jesus. Every trace of sadness is being replaced by joy and hope as my awareness of your presence fills my soul. I pray my soul increases in the awareness of the Lord each day, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. Mighty One, you have done great things for me, and holy is your name. I need your saving grace, every moment of my life. Loving God, help me be a better voice of your will, of your message, of your peace. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

December 14, Day 16, Sing Unto the Lord
Zephaniah 3:15 – The LORD has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more.

Zephaniah 3:17-18 – The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior; He will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love, He will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals.

This is a season full of song. Before Thanksgiving day some radio stations devote all their airtime to holiday favorites until January. We read of angel choirs singing “glory to God in the highest,” and open the doors of our homes to joyful carolers warbling “o come let us adore him.” But Zephaniah presents a startling contrast: instead of us singing of Jesus’ goodness, we get a picture of him belting out a festive praise song to us. Not only do we rejoice because of his salvation, he rejoices to save us.

As you walk today, walk with an attitude of confidence even if you lack it yourself. God wants you to live with confidence in yourself and in the promises God has made for you. Pray today for God to remove unneeded anxiety from your life.

Almighty God, help me remember that you are always shouldering burdens with me, so that I am never alone. Song of my soul, I delight in you, you rejoice over me! my salvation gives you immense satisfaction, and pleasure. I imagine you smiling, rejoicing, and singing a joyous song for me ever in my heart and mind. Renew me in your love.Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

December 15, Day 17 – Offering God our Best Gifts

Zephaniah 3:16 – On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak.

Whether you are praying or helping a neighbor, your hands are an important element in your service to God and others. Make a fist as tight as you are able, then spread your hands as wide as you can. If this does not hurt, repeat it several times throughout the day.

Prayer
Gracious God, I thank you today for hands that can serve you in a variety of ways. I obey your will. You are my salvation. I love and adore you. I give you my grateful heart and rejoicing in your saving grace. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

“A star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel.” Numbers 24:17 (2).

“On entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11

The wise men followed a star. When I read this narrative I’m following the wise men, but end up finding a star. But do I see him as clearly as these learned men did? What do the gifts I offer the Lord say about my worship? Do I give him reverence and honor, rather than gold, gifts of the soul fit for a king. Do I offer him my most fervent, sincere prayers, rather than frankincense, knowing he is a priest who ever lives to intercede for me? And what about the myrrh? What a strange gift it was from the Magi. Myrrh was bitter, used for its medicinal properties. But it had another use: to embalm the dead. What can I offer Christ knowing he will die for my sins? The only thing I have that’s acceptable is my grateful heart, rejoicing in his saving grace.

December 16, Day 18, Going the Distance
Zephaniah 3:19 – I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth.

Isaiah 52:7 – How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, your God reigns.

Everyone comes in contact with outcasts, even if the outcast in your life is just the awkward and insecure person who makes people uncomfortable whenever he or she is around. Do you interact with such people in positive ways or do you help add to their feelings of separation?

Prayer
Understanding God, help me see your imprint on each person who comes before me this day.

Lord, you are in plain sight. God, I pray you always fill our souls forever. We sing in joy. Jesus, thank you for coming and saving us from our sins. I rejoice and am comforted feeling your presence. As I laid in ruins because of my own choices, you came into plain sight and saved my soul. You have brought me to salvation.

Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

Through Jesus, God stepped from eternity into time, an incomprehensible distance, to be with us; to save us; to bring us home. He reigns in our hearts, and rules over all the world. This is welcome news for those who have languished here, so far away from our soul’s home. Thank you Lord Jesus Christ.

December 17, Day 19, Let Your Light Shine
Isaiah 12:2-3 – Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid, for the LORD GOD is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation. With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

John 1:6-9 – There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe in him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

Tell what we know about Jesus, about God, let us Rejoice!

Imagine a time when you were very thirsty, maybe even dehydrated. As you begin to sip on water, you feel your body coming back into balance. As you drink water today, think of how this is a wonderful metaphor of our salvation.

Prayer
Creator God, thank you for life-giving water that quenches the thirst of my Spirit. I radiate the Light of Jesus. I tell others what I have seen, and what I know of you. You are love. This I know. So make me a lover, of you and others. I rejoice that you’ve given me your light, I am in darkness no more. Bring light to the whole world. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

December 18, Day 20, Jesus is Family
Philippians 4:5 – Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.

John 1:10-12 – He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God.

Is your gentleness like a light hidden under a basket? Do not hide the concern, the care, you have for others. Walk through each day as though the Lord is near and be willing to make yourself vulnerable to others.

Brother Jesus, you’ve enlightened me. God of peace, as I walk among your children today may they see your face in mine. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

December 19, Day 21, Always On Time

Philippians 4:6-7 – Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 11:2-5 – When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them.

Advent is a short journey within the larger context of your life. But travel is almost always more fulfilling when you are joined by someone else. This passage notes that your life should be an ongoing conversation with God, that you are never alone on your journey.

Prayer
God of my past, present and future, incline my ears to you so that I might hear your still small voice guiding me. My Jesus, You are God. You create good in my life, and in the whole world. I embrace what you do in my life, and in the lives of others. I rejoice in your love. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

December 20, Day 22, Keeping Watch for the Lord
Luke 3:10-11 – And the crowds asked [John the Baptist], “What should we do?” In reply he said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.”

Mark 13:37 – And what I am saying to you I say to all: Stay awake!

Scriptures exhort us: stay awake!

You are approaching a season of gift giving. Consider taking this passage literally. Take a few moments to clean out your closet of unneeded clothing or your pantry of food you do not need. If you do not know a family in need, share these items with a local church, clothes closet or food pantry.

Prayer
Risen Savior, Lord, have mercy on me. Today is the day of my salvation. In this very instant, make me ready to say yes, and amen, to every way you wish to present yourself to me. Come, Lord Jesus. Merciful God, in this season of giving, help me be mindful of the needs of my brothers and sisters. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. December 21, Day 23, Prepare the Way of the Lord

Micah 5:2 – But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days.

Mark 1:2-3 – Written in the prophet Isaiah, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness; ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, and make his paths straight.”

It is easy to feel insignificant in this world. We are preparing to celebrate a young girl in a small town giving birth to a little boy in whom the hope of the world will come to rest. God can do extraordinary things through unlikely people – including you.

Prayer
Almighty God, mold me and use me as an instrument of your will. Lord, I am sorry for my past sins, I desire not to sin anymore. You continue to come to me, mercifully forgiving me of my sins. I promise to work at become a sinless person and I acknowledge this is not possible with total surrender to your will. Give me to strength to be faithful to you, and avoid the many occasions for sin presented to me. I want to be pure of heart with great joy. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

December 22, Day 24, Offering Ourselves as Sacrifice
Luke 1:46b, 48-49 – “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior…for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name.”

Hebrews 10:5 – Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, ‘Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.

The embodied God was a living sacrifice. What’s more, he calls us who are made in his image and likeness “to be living sacrifices, dedicated and acceptable to God. That is the kind of worship for you, as sensible people,” we are told in Romans 12:1. Let us consider the role our bodies plays in the greatest story every told. And let us try with all our might, to yield these bodies, to the will of God.

As part of your meditative time today, consider gifts you have received from God, maybe even writing them down. Throughout the day, consider this list, and thank God for all he has done for you.

Prayer
I am a temple, your tabernacle and dwelling place. I am made in your image and likeness. I will respect my body as I should, honor it as I would any church building I’d walk into. As I prepare for your coming, help me to see my body as what it is: a living sacrifice. Jesus, help me to obey your word, and not model my behavior by the world’s standards, but be transformed by the renewing of my mind, so that I can discern what your will is: what is good, acceptable, and mature. I need you, body and soul. Generous God, thank you for the many blessings you have poured out on me. May I remain forever grateful of your generosity. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

December 23, Day 25, Come Lord Jesus
Luke 1:52-53 – He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.

Luke 1:57-58 – The time came for Elizabeth to have her child, and she gave birth to her son; and when her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had lavished on her his faithful love, they shared her joy.

Elizabeth’s miracle child John, whose name means, “God is gracious,” was evidence of God’s lavish, faithful love, and the joy of his birth, at long last, touched everyone around her. But John was not just proof that God loved Elizabeth. He bears witness to God’s extraordinary love for the whole world. For you! Let us all bear witness to God!

We are approaching a season of great feasts when many good things will be on your table. Yet our feasts often fall short when it comes to the health considerations of those around the table. Will there be people around your table watching their cholesterol or their fat intake? Will you host anyone with diabetes? Be mindful of the health concerns around your Christmas table and plan today for choices all can enjoy.

Prayer
Loving God, help me create a Christmas season welcoming to, and mindful of, all who might visit. Prepare the way in our hearts for the Lord! God never gives up on us. Thank you God. We are forever grateful! Thank you for renewing our lives. Thank you for redemption, salvation, forgiveness, and completely filling our souls. Thank you for teaching unconditional Love! Your grace provides joy forever. Thank you for eternal life. Our prayer is simple: Come into our lives, forever, Lord Jesus. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

December 24, Day 26, Welcoming the Light
Micah 5:4-5 – And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he shall be the one of peace.

Luke 2:6 – While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child.

Your journey with God has begun anew. God incarnate will be here soon. Be fervent in your prayers, gentle with one another and know God, your Creator, remains steadfast by your side today and always.

Prayer
Gracious, loving God, you have always been with me, but I am often blind to your presence. Guide me where you would have me go. Help me to move closer to you and your plan for me. Lord Jesus Christ, God, light of the world, we are no longer walking in darkness. The messiah is born! We are fixing our eyes to your light. We are here in your light, sweeping our hearts clean, and flinging the doors to our souls, our lives, wide open. Come into my heart Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of my Life. I give myself to you. So it is, and will always be.

Hearing gods Voice

How do we succeed in hearing God’s voice? By spending time with God. The ultimate is not merely to get direction from God; the ultimate is to know God. God can make it difficult for us to get into His presence because He wants to see if we truly will expend the spiritual energy and exercise necessary to do so. Will we stop certain sins? Will we get rid of things that hinder us? Will we truly seek Him with all of our hearts?

Some people only want a quick fix, “God, tell me how to make money on this business deal, please. See You next time!” And then that is the end of it. But God wants to be treated with reverence and deference His nature warrants. He wants to change us, not merely give us quick answers to difficult problems.

I especially hear gods voice when I Pray. I pray often. We can pray anywhere, at any time. It doesn’t require special language, knowledge, or a sacred space. All we need to do is see our ordinary moments as the perfect occasions for communicating with God, then speak from our heart and hear with our soul.

Let us change, know joy forever. Come into God’s presence, spend time with God, and allow God to purify us from our sinful nature.

Advent, Day 4, Grant Us Understanding

Psalm 25:5 – Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long.

Trust, even trust in God, must be cultivated and developed over time. This passage asks you to trust God as you are moving forward. As you walk today, consider how you are allowing God to lead you.

Prayer
Merciful Father, You are always sending me help, and deliverance from my sins. Do not give up on me, good Father. Quiet me, Lord, so that I may hear from you, and see the magnificent gifts you have placed in my life. Steadfast God, I want to go where you lead. Help me see your way for me. Come into our hearts Lord Jesus Christ. Take Control of our Lives. We give ourselves to you. So it is, and will always be.
